Christmas in Switzerland

To celebrate Christmas we got into groups of four and worked collaboratively to find out about Christmas in different countries all around the world. My group worked on Switzerland and we found a lot of interesting things about Switzerland like how they call their Santa Samichlaus. .To show our learning we recorded our google slides using screencastify. I worked on this DLO with Ma'ata, Calvin, Sylis, and Lyric.

Clean Up Crew

Our maths focus yesterday was geometry. To help us with this we did a coordinates challenge were you have to follow the directions. If it says 6, 3 you have to go across first then you have to go down to get the correct mark. I think I found this easy because I have worked with coordinates before and it came up with a weird picture.

Google Logo Game

For our self management we played the Google Logo Game. In this game I have used resilience. I didn't quit I tried my best to go to the next level. For this game I had to use codes so that the bunny was able to eat all the carrots that is set for him. After finishing that level you go to a more challenging level that has more carrots.

Tech Reflection 2017

This year was the year 8's second time going to tech at Tamaki College. This year I did: food tech with Mrs Heka, graphics with Miss Ferguson, and hard materials with Mr Grundy. They were all great but my favorite is food tech. In food tech we made really nice food. The first thing we made with Mrs Heka was kebabs and potato salad. With Ms Ferguson we learnt how to make a clock. With Mr Grundy we learnt how to make stained glasses. We also learnt how to cut glass. I have learnt many skills from these activities like how to make: stains glasses, clocks, and different foods. These were some of the many skills I learnt this year thanks to tech.

Summer Learning Journey

On behalf of Rachel, Hazel came to our assembly on Friday, to talk to us about the Summer Learning Journey 2017 - 2018. The Summer Learning Journey is a free blogging challenge for children year 1 - 8. The theme for this year is going back in time. This year we will be looking at the past of New Zealand and the early settling here.

Social Science Studys

As usual last week we went to tech. We were finishing off our stained glasses. After tech we were invited to stay a bit longer to do a different activity. I was put in social science with Ms Apelu. My favorite part of social science was the first activity. The activity was to play this game called pursed. Because we used google maps to find what city we were in. For the second activity we used google earth we had to roll the dice and see where we landed. I landed in Mallocra, Spain. So I had to find facts that would persuade Mrs Anderson to go to Mallorca. Here is what I wrote so far:

Dear Mrs Anderson we have been researching different locations for your next holiday. We think you should go to Mallorca in Spain. The first reason why we think you should go to Mallorca is because it is a famous landmark in Spain. The second reason is that Mallorca is in Spain.

Times Tables

On Monday Mrs Anderson's maths group created a DLO using any maths strategy that we wanted. Me and my partner Nickaela decided to choose this strategy because it is simple and easy to use. The questions that we were solving is: How many green triangles mama needs to make a Tivaevae. To find out what the answer to the question is listen to our Screencastify that explains how we got our answer.

Hot Money - Summarising

Image result for hot money by bill nagelkerke

Mishaan and I created this DLO because in reading we have been doing novel study's. Mishaan and I picked this book called Hot Money and started reading up to chapter 2. After we finished reading the book we decided to do a summary  about what we have read so far. We wrote down 20 important words from the text. Then we picked the 6 most important words from the 20 words. Next we formed a sentence with the 6 most important words. I really enjoyed working collaboratively with my partner Mishaan.

Badminton - Week 3

Today for Kiwi Sports with Kevin, we were learning how to grip the racket for forehand and backhand, and how to control our swing and the direction of the shuttlecock. We began by practicing volleying the shuttlecock on our rackets. Then we had to get a partner and one person threw the shuttlecock and the other person had to try and hit it back to them.  We then had a rally with our partner to see how many times we could hit it back and forward to each other. We also learnt about the stance to use when moving towards the shuttlecock. My partner today for badminton was Joshua V.

Writing Explanation

How children learn at school

Children are curious to know things. They learn in many different ways. If they don’t know what to do they ask for help. They watch others and copy them because learning is a big part of their lives.

They are curious to learn things because they want to be able to do it. They ask for feedback and feed forward so that they can improve in the areas they need more improvement on. They watch their friends to learn new things. They help themselves by taking risks.

They learn about things that interests them. When children take risks  not only are they learning learning new things, they also get an experience of what it is like.

Children practice their skills to improve their learning. One of the things they do is ask questions and focus more. They gain knowledge from others by asking and use it to improve their skills.

Children are curious to learn things. Not all the time children know what to do so, they ask questions. They learn in many different ways. learning is a big part of their lives. They watch others and copy them.

I wrote this together with my partner Oh hsen. After we had finished we went to another pair and asked them to proof read it. We also asked them to give us feedback and feed-forward.

Screencastify

On Friday Mrs Grant showed us how to use Screencastify. Mrs Grant was teaching us step by step. We then started to make our screencastify's. What we did was find one of our maths DLO's to do a screencastify about and I have chosen my fractions DLO. My question is 112 + 84. Before Mrs Grant came to show us how to record using screencastify, LS2 made a script so we could be prepared and so we know what to say while we are recording about our Math DLO's. I really enjoyed learning how to make a screencastify because it is easier for me now to record about my thinking and work.

Mary Seacole

This week my task was to research someone with a positive attitude despite the difficulties they have faced. The person that I found was Mary Seacole. I choose her because I think she has a positive attitude despite the difficulties and I know this because she was a Nurse and was injured in the Crimean war. For this activity I was working with Sakae and Ma'ata.

The Labyrinth

Yesterday and today we watched a movie called Labyrinth. We filled in these documents Ms. Kirkpatrick sent us. You can see our activities we worked on as a group of four here above. In my group was Charlize, Te Wai, and Latham. You can also see our DLO we made on 1 thing a narrative structure had to have, a character intro, and our comment on what part of the movie to our eyes was the best.

Maths

On Wednesday we had maths. We did less than, greater that, and equal. Read my DLO to find out more about what we did. In this activity I worked with Sa kae and Lyndon.

Flying Rockets

Today after tech we stayed at tamaki college again to finish off our rockets. We were very busy this morning because we had to glue our pieces together,  add some string and a strip of paper to the nose and body, insert the burn less paper in the body, then finally put the engine inside of the body. After we finished the rockets it was flying time. We went to the field and flew the rockets one by one. When I went to fly my rocket I was a little scared because I thought it would fly straight to me but I did it anyway. To make the rocket go I had to hold two wires that were attached to the rocket to a battery and the rocket just flew away. The person that came first was sajiha and second was Cj. It was a really hard day today but it was still fun and it's also unfortunate that not everyone got to fly there rockets. I would like to say a big thanks to Mr Dunn and Mrs Ferguson for making time for us to do rockets it was really fun

Tahuna Torea Trip

Yesterday we went to tahuna torea for a trip. We went to tahuna torea because we have been learning about the godwits and tahuna torea is were the godwits stay when they come to New Zealand. To find out what we did at tahuna torea have a look at my DLO. I have also made a collage of our day there at tahuna torea.

Rockets Collage

I have made a collage about our day at tamaki college. It shows the different things that we did and the steps we took to make our final rocket. We had a few different challenges starting with making a straw rocket then moving on to making 3D rockets. The final picture shows Mr Dunn flying his rocket Infinity 1.

Straw Rockets

I have made a DLO on how to make a straw rocket. You may have seen my other post about rockets on my blog showing on what we did at tamaki college on Friday. On Friday we also made a straw rocket that we had to test out. This DLO is step by step on how to make a straw rocket. At the end of the presentation I have also put a video on how to make a straw rocket. The video was made by Mr. Dunn at Tamaki college. If you haven't already seen my other DLO here is the link: http://pbsjorjak.blogspot.co.nz/2016/12/rockets.html

Rockets

On Friday the year 7's and 8's stayed at tamaki college after tech to make rockets with Mr Dunn. Mr Dunn showed us a video of some rockets taking off. Then he showed us a video on how to make a straw rocket. This DLO shows our aim, our hypothesis, our method, our results, our conclusion, our evaluation, and the meaning of the symbols in the top right hand corner. In this presentation I worked with Afu, Breeana, Sakae, Ma'ata, and Chalize. If you want to know how to make a straw rocket go to my other blog post called Straw Rockets.
