Christmas in Switzerland
To celebrate Christmas we got into groups of four and worked collaboratively to find out about Christmas in different countries all around the world. My group worked on Switzerland and we found a lot of interesting things about Switzerland like how they call their Santa Samichlaus. .To show our learning we recorded our google slides using screencastify. I worked on this DLO with Ma'ata, Calvin, Sylis, and Lyric.

Clean Up Crew
Our maths focus yesterday was geometry. To help us with this we did a coordinates challenge were you have to follow the directions. If it says 6, 3 you have to go across first then you have to go down to get the correct mark. I think I found this easy because I have worked with coordinates before and it came up with a weird picture.
Google Logo Game
For our self management we played the Google Logo Game. In this game I have used resilience. I didn't quit I tried my best to go to the next level. For this game I had to use codes so that the bunny was able to eat all the carrots that is set for him. After finishing that level you go to a more challenging level that has more carrots.
Tech Reflection 2017
This year was the year 8's second time going to tech at Tamaki College. This year I did: food tech with Mrs Heka, graphics with Miss Ferguson, and hard materials with Mr Grundy. They were all great but my favorite is food tech. In food tech we made really nice food. The first thing we made with Mrs Heka was kebabs and potato salad. With Ms Ferguson we learnt how to make a clock. With Mr Grundy we learnt how to make stained glasses. We also learnt how to cut glass. I have learnt many skills from these activities like how to make: stains glasses, clocks, and different foods. These were some of the many skills I learnt this year thanks to tech.

Social Science Studys
As usual last week we went to tech. We were finishing off our stained glasses. After tech we were invited to stay a bit longer to do a different activity. I was put in social science with Ms Apelu. My favorite part of social science was the first activity. The activity was to play this game called pursed. Because we used google maps to find what city we were in. For the second activity we used google earth we had to roll the dice and see where we landed. I landed in Mallocra, Spain. So I had to find facts that would persuade Mrs Anderson to go to Mallorca. Here is what I wrote so far:
Dear Mrs Anderson we have been researching different locations for your next holiday. We think you should go to Mallorca in Spain. The first reason why we think you should go to Mallorca is because it is a famous landmark in Spain. The second reason is that Mallorca is in Spain.

Hot Money - Summarising
Mishaan and I created this DLO because in reading we have been doing novel study's. Mishaan and I picked this book called Hot Money and started reading up to chapter 2. After we finished reading the book we decided to do a summary about what we have read so far. We wrote down 20 important words from the text. Then we picked the 6 most important words from the 20 words. Next we formed a sentence with the 6 most important words. I really enjoyed working collaboratively with my partner Mishaan.

Badminton - Week 3
Today for Kiwi Sports with Kevin, we were learning how to grip the racket for forehand and backhand, and how to control our swing and the direction of the shuttlecock. We began by practicing volleying the shuttlecock on our rackets. Then we had to get a partner and one person threw the shuttlecock and the other person had to try and hit it back to them. We then had a rally with our partner to see how many times we could hit it back and forward to each other. We also learnt about the stance to use when moving towards the shuttlecock. My partner today for badminton was Joshua V.

Writing Explanation
How children learn at school
Children are curious to know things. They learn in many different ways. If they don’t know what to do they ask for help. They watch others and copy them because learning is a big part of their lives.
They are curious to learn things because they want to be able to do it. They ask for feedback and feed forward so that they can improve in the areas they need more improvement on. They watch their friends to learn new things. They help themselves by taking risks.
They learn about things that interests them. When children take risks not only are they learning learning new things, they also get an experience of what it is like.
Children practice their skills to improve their learning. One of the things they do is ask questions and focus more. They gain knowledge from others by asking and use it to improve their skills.
Children are curious to learn things. Not all the time children know what to do so, they ask questions. They learn in many different ways. learning is a big part of their lives. They watch others and copy them.
I wrote this together with my partner Oh hsen. After we had finished we went to another pair and asked them to proof read it. We also asked them to give us feedback and feed-forward.

Screencastify
On Friday Mrs Grant showed us how to use Screencastify. Mrs Grant was teaching us step by step. We then started to make our screencastify's. What we did was find one of our maths DLO's to do a screencastify about and I have chosen my fractions DLO. My question is 112 + 84. Before Mrs Grant came to show us how to record using screencastify, LS2 made a script so we could be prepared and so we know what to say while we are recording about our Math DLO's. I really enjoyed learning how to make a screencastify because it is easier for me now to record about my thinking and work.

Mary Seacole
This week my task was to research someone with a positive attitude despite the difficulties they have faced. The person that I found was Mary Seacole. I choose her because I think she has a positive attitude despite the difficulties and I know this because she was a Nurse and was injured in the Crimean war. For this activity I was working with Sakae and Ma'ata.

Kiwi Can Challenges
Our Kiwi can topic this term is facing challenges and how we can overcome them. Today we played a few games that were either easy or challenging. One of them was to bring an object to real life using your team mates. You had to have 2 people in the ring and use a idea that hasn't been used before. I think that challenge was the hardest because you only had a short time to think of a new idea.

In his school, the student body is largely divided between Catholics and Jews, and every Wednesday both groups go to their separate churches for religious classes. You can find this book on the tamaki college overdrive site.

Kate Sheppard
Two word sentence
In writing we had a look at two word sentences, two word sentences are simple sentences. Using the simple sentence we added in FANBOYS which makes it a complex sentence which joins two simple sentences or ideas together with a connective. Using the complex sentence we used AAWWUIBBIS to make it a compound sentence.

Experience Day at Tamaki College
The Yr 8’s stayed at Tamaki College after tech for experience day. Tamaki college had given us a chance to know what it’s like and what we do at college. In maths we played battleship and had so much fun. In science we were learning about static electricity. Mr. Stoddard and Mr. Singh showed us how to bend water with static and he also showed us a cool trick that you can do with static. The last thing that they showed us in science was a cool experiment called elephant toothpaste and that experiment was awesome. Then we had lunch and for lunch they had subway, an apple, an bottle of water, and a muesli bar. Then we had English with Mr Stevenson and that was so fun, we were finding visual images to make connections with new vocabulary. Next we had PE and we played a really cool game with Mr Moyes called turbo touch. Then Tamaki College took us back school.

Why it's important to stand up to bullies
Today in inquiry we were discussing how to speak up and how to speak out if someone bullies you or you see someone being bullied. People who are being bullied should use their WITS and stand up to themselves. Sky, Nickaela, Hajera, Zahra and I have made this short film about standing up to bullies and how to help a victim of a bully.

Zookeeper
In careers we took a test which asked what we were interested in. It gave us the option of not interested, neutral, fairly interested and very interested. Depending on what you answered they will analyse how many jobs that you could do or could be interested in. I got 125 jobs in total which was a lot of careers to choose from. I picked one job that I think I would like which was a zookeeper. The site that we were using is called Careers Quest.

Hyperbole
Our focus today for writing was hyperbole. A hyperbole is when you use extreme exaggeration in a sentence. For example "My heart was pounding out of my chest", that is impossible but it is used to express an emotion. I wrote a story about "A hunted alleyway" home that includes at least five hyperbole. I found that putting hyperbole into my writing can make it more interesting.

Week 4 Tech
Today in tech we started our second rotation of the year 2017. Last week we were in cooking but now we are in graphics with Mrs Ferguson. In graphics we are making clocks. But first we had to make a collage about ourselves and what we like. I like lots of things so I found it hard to choose what I should put on my DLO. After we had finished making our collages about our self we had to create a DLO and find images of clocks. We were only allowed to put transparent photo's on the DLO. To get the photo onto the DLO we had to drag the photo onto the drawing. Once we had finished the DLO of the clocks it was time to leave so we all packed up and we went back to the bus to go school.

Week 4 Dance
Today in dance we worked with Miss Brett, we were having fun because we were practicing our own warm ups then Mataio and Fraidon led us through their warm up. Then on the tv screen there was a video clip with two people making shapes which they combined together to make dance moves. In this dance lesson I worked with Sakae. Sakae and I were making shapes like in the video. We were a bit stuck because we didn't know how to make a circle. But we still enjoyed it. If you would like to see the video that we watched here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m924pEUiI2A. I hope that you enjoy watching this video just like we did.

Week 3 Dance
Today in dance we had to get into our groups from last week and practice the exercises that we created last week. After we had finished doing our warm ups we all had to do Ofa's and Josh's warm up . When we finished Ofa and Josh's warm up we had to get back into our groups and try to make a triangle, square, and a circle shape with any body part. It was really hard to make the shapes because we all had different ideas but we combined our ideas to make one dance that we all liked. Today in dance we learned the difference and the meaning between a free flow dance and a bound flow dance. The people in my group were Sakae and Zahra. This week Mrs Anderson was our dance teacher.

World Of Maths
Yesterday at school after lunch we went to the hall and Mrs A put us into groups with LS1. When we were all in our groups Mrs A, Mr Ogilvie, and Charles sent all the groups to different tables. Charles is the man who works for world of maths. The First table that my group went to was Off the Islands. The people in my group were Sakae, Sila, Giovanni, and Zane. My favorite activity out of all the maths rotations was the first activity that we did called Off the islands. I liked this activity because it was really hard at first but once you really think about it you will finally get it. While we were working out the problems we had to also think about key composites. We also had to work together as a team and collaborate with each other.

Dance in LS2
In the morning and middle block we did dance. In dance Mrs Anderson said we had to create our own warm up routine. My partners were Sa kae and Zahra we watched warm up videos to get some inspiration. Making up the moves was easy but doing them was really hard. Warming up and stretching before you have a sports event it can help you move a lot easier, but if you warm up and stretch to much you will lose some of your strength to do something. This was a very fun task to complete and I cant wait till next week.

NZ Rubbish
For inquiry this term we are learning about how we can look after our planet earth by using reduce, reuse and recycle. We found out that a report says New Zealander's are really bad at recycling. Also every year New Zealander's throw away 3.6 million tonnes of rubbish each year. We looked at two articles about what we should do to solve our waste problem. Then we made our own opinion. I agreed with article two.

Pie Pastry
Today at tech we finished making our pies. Last week we made our beef pie filling and this week we made the pastry. We had to collect two types of pastry and roll them. Then we had to measure the pastry with the pie dish and cut the pastry to fit the pie dish. We then added the filling from last week into the pie and put some cheese on top. Next we had to cut more of the pastry to put on top. After that we had to make a letter or symbol with the left over pastry so that you know it's yours. The final step was to brush the egg mixture onto the pie and give the tray to Mrs Heka to put in the oven. When the pies came out of the oven we had to take a photo and then blog about our day at tech.

Math Solving
In maths we had to create an DLO and solve the question. The question that we had to answer is if you saved 20 litres of water each day for a week. How many litres would have you saved?. This maths DLO that I have made shows you what the questions is and how I solved it. We were allowed to use any strategy that we wanted as long as the question can be answered. We also had to write on our DLO why we used the strategy and because we used it.
